Granola:

500gr untreated oatmeal
200gr sunflower seeds
200gr of sesame
200gr peeled, sliced almonds
200gr of various dry fruits of your choice
500gr of puffed wheat
1/2 cup of canola oil
1 cup of date/carob syrup

stir-fry the oatmeal for 5-10 minutes with the silan and oil until the juices are bubbling and all the oatmeal is fully coated in the mix. Spread the oatmeal onto a flat oven pan and place in the oven for 10-20 minutes in full heat while stirring every couple of minutes or so.
When the oatmeal starts to gain a brownish-golden color, remove from oven, add the rest of the ingredients and mix.

vaccines? [06 Nov 2009|07:47pm]

veganpeople

[please_collapse]
ok i've been trying to find out online, and doing some research, but have found no answer:
WHY are vaccines derived from eggs?
and which ones are and which aren't?!
there's been a lot of talk of vaccines on this community recently and it just got me thinking. i've had a few vaccines (necessary for traveling & school, supposedly) and i'd hate to think they were from eggs. i have never had any sort of flu shot, which i know are from eggs, are ALL vaccines from eggs? sorry if that's a dumb question.
i'm sorry if these have already been asked and i missed it.
thanks in advance guys <333

[erinelsberg]
Hi everyone! I'm new to LJ, and semi-new to veganism.. So a community like this is something I need (:

I'm going to PF Changs, and was wondering what they have there that is vegan? I saw online that the Buddha Feast is, but I was wondering if anything else that anyone knew about is? The information I found online was not very recent.
Thanks!

Kentucky Soybean Association is against animal rights!!!!!! [06 Nov 2009|06:00pm]

[mamabyrd]
The issue with the videos, I posted about a couple of days ago, is much more serious than I realized.  It seems that the Kentucky Soybean Association is at war against animal rights.  I'm not sure what to do.  I was hoping maybe you could tell me.  First, you need to go to this link and read what it says.  It's bad.  Then come back and read the message I got back from the advisor in charge of Future Farmers of America, after voicing my concerns about the videos the children were making.  These people are shooting themselves in the foot.  Seriously!  Lots of vegans eat soy!  I'm about to become soy-free, at least I'm going to have to figure out what soy is grown in Kentucky.  But I'll bet you anything it's not just Kentucky.  So PLEASE, go read, come back and tell me what to do.  Tell me what you are going to do.

Breastfeeding question [06 Nov 2009|01:29pm]

[jinxedsheep]
I am going on 8 months pregnant. I have known this whole time, as well a years before, that I would be breastfeeding my little one. However, at my last OB appointment I was told it wouldn't be good for the baby for me to breastfeed. I have many health problems and the fact that I am pregnant is a miricle in it's self. My doctor supports my Vegan diet and always has great suggestions. I take a lot of medications. Right now I'm only on about half of my needed meds because of the baby. Once I give birth I can go back  on them, but they would be bad for baby through breast milk. Also, I take narcotics and we know that the baby will have to go through withdraws when he is born. If I keep giving him meds through my breast milk it will take forever. So, I am not going to breastfeed. Any advice on this topic? I don't know where to start or what I should us for him. I am sad.

Vegan friendly stocks? [06 Nov 2009|03:03pm]

veganpeople

[johnsu01]

Does anyone have suggestions for companies I could buy stock in that sell vegan products or are in some other way vegan friendly? Tofutti (TOF) is one possibility, or there is the complicated Whole Foods (WFMI), but most of the other "mainstream" vegan brands (Silk, White Wave, Boca, etc) seem to be owned by very large companies doing too many things that I disagree with. Of course I'm concerned about profitability too, but right now I just need a list to start researching :).

Thanks!

Honeycomb [06 Nov 2009|04:50pm]

vegancooking

[lorcas_novena]
Just made this (along with aforementioned hazlenut biscuits) for fireworks tonight, turned out much better than my previous attempt at cinder toffee.

4 tablespoons on golden syrup
100f caster sugar
2 teaspoons of bicarb

Heat the syrup and sugar over a medium heat (swirl the pan but don't stir in case it goes grainy), keep heating until it's bubbling and brown (but not burnt), then take of the heat and quickly stir in the bicarb which should make it bubblier. Turn it out onto a baking sheet on a baking tray and leave to set for 20 mins. You might need to set it in the fridge if it's humid. Once set it's best broken up with a rolling pin and is lovely by itself or dipped in chocolate. If you crush it it's also delicious in soya yoghurt with fruit or with chocolate sauce crumbled over Swedish Glace.

Fun vs Time [06 Nov 2009|02:20pm]

emong
[ mood | chipper ]

In this world, there are too many fun things and not enough time. Having a job is not always a fun thing, but in general it is a good thing, and a rewarding thing. And a thing that pays money with which you can pay for the fun.

I'm liking the new job, by the way. All my gripes are... basically the same as some of the gripes in my old job, but every time I sit down with the company credit card and book myself some travel, or go to a meeting about a launch party, or open the door from the comfort of my chair, all discontentment washes away. Many of the old gripes are gone. But language will be language and editors will be editors - magicians with the words of others, distracted with their own. Getting carried away with the depth of ideas and forgetting the mundanities of the everyday, such as full stops.

Advice on, er, coming out? [06 Nov 2009|11:44pm]

veganpeople

[pincerna]
Basically, I'm currently in highschool, living at home, don't have a job, and intending to become vegan. I'm not currently vegetarian, and haven't expressed any interest in either that or veganism to my family. My younger sister is intending to become vegan with me.

So, I have two concerns/questions:

1. What, in people's opinion, is the best way to tell parents/family members? Do you think the straight "I've decided to go vegan, kthxbai" works better, or a more subtle approach "So, I've been considering veganism, could you purchase x, y, z so I can try", for example? How did everyone "come out", so to speak?

2. I'm a little bit worried about not being in full control of my diet. On one hand this seems a bit silly, because I know omni diets can be just as lacking in nutrients, but it is sort of scary to leave the comfort of all these accepted foods and start eating without them, without being the one who actually purchases food. I expect mocking from my parents, but I don't think they'd refuse to buy me the food I needed (the only thing is some of it might be more expensive). Still, I find not being in full control of my diet sort of worrying, so was wondering if anyone is in the same boat? Are their any other vegans who are in still at home and not buying their own food? Should I be worried?

Any advice or any experiences are much appreciated. :)

Andrew Collings had just arrived, all ready for podcast 89 and I was feeling pretty chipper, when my phone rang. It was someone from my management agency and I could tell from the tone of her voice that it wasn't going to be good news, but I had a fair idea of what that news might be.
I was about to get dumped. In a professional sense.
As you've probably noticed I've been pretty busy for the last month, mostly working on stuff for free, but my only regular paid commitment was as a script associate on the Russell Howard show.

Almost managed a complete day off today and fitted in another early afternoon cinema trip to see An Education which was OK. I identified most with the original schoolboy "boyfriend" of the main character who was awkward and out of his depth and doomed to failure. Not that I am like that now... well not entirely... but I was then, so well done to (I think) Matthew Beard for that excellent portrayal. It's charming and entertaining enough and there was no one clambering around the auditorium with their shirt off, so that was good.

How to make delicious polenta! [06 Nov 2009|07:41am]

vegancooking

[mikesedge]
For a long time I was under the impression that polenta was somehow difficult to make... I finally tried it and was surprised by how easy it was and how good it came out! Now I make it all the time and it's a delicious base for meals. You can have it with vegetables or sauces, serve it with beans, as an appetizer, etc.

There are a few different variations on the recipe but this is the one I've found the easiest and best. Just thought I'd post this for anyone else who might have been intimidated. :-)

Easy Baked Polenta
(Note-ingredients can be increased by 1.5 or doubled to increase yield)

Ingredients
•One cup yellow or white finely ground cornmeal
•3 cups water
•1/4 cup oil or margarine (I usually use light olive oil)
•OPTIONAL: a few tablespoons nutritional yeast or cheese substitute
•Salt to taste
•Paprika (optional, but recommended)

Directions
1.Combine cornmeal and 1 cup of cold water.
2.Bring remaining 2 cups of water and salt to a boil in a sauce pan over medium-high heat.
3.Add cornmeal mixture slowly, stirring well.
4.Reduce heat to medium and cook, stirring constantly until mixture is thick and begins to form large bubbles, about 3 to 5 minutes. Continue cooking another 1 to 2 minutes. (Word of advice: it's important to stir WELL in this step to prevent lumps--also, there is a chance it will spatter when it starts bubbling, so use a large enough pot and again keep stirring well throughout this step)
5.Remove from heat and stir in oil/margarine and NYF/cheese, blending well.
6.Pour into a baking dish and sprinkle with paprika.
7.Bake in a pre-heated 350 degree oven until top is brown and crusty, about 35 to 40 minutes.

Serves about 4.

At this point you will have a delicious soft polenta, firm on top, warm and fluffy in the middle. If you cool it overnight in the fridge it will firm up.

Girl Fun [05 Nov 2009|11:34pm]

[____hissunshine]
Any vegan food I can inhale that will keep me from feeling like I am dying on my period? Sorry for the TMI. People always say eat salmon!! And I say... yeah no. Just anything that can relieve nausea, cramping, and does anyone else get horrible lower back pain? Not fair. Is there vegan foods I shouldn't be eating?

I'm sorry if this isn't a good post for the community, remove if need be.

Help? Thank you!!!

Thanksgiving [06 Nov 2009|01:57am]

veganpeople

[freakshownia]
My husband and I will be spending Thanksgiving this year with his mom's family. She has offered to make us something vegan which is excellent! She would like us to send her some recipes. She does not normally cook (last Thanksgiving was entirely prepared foods from Whole Foods) so I want to give her a recipe for something that's traditionally Thanksgivingy, simple to make, and without too many "weird" ingredients. Any suggestions? My family never made a big deal out of Thanksgiving so I didn't grow up with a traditional dinner (often we just ordered pizza) so I don't even know what all dishes are traditional Thanksgiving food, let alone vegan versions of them. The one Thanksgiving food we always did have in my family was Waldorf Salad (though my mom always made it with marshmallow fluff and I'm not sure how traditional that is... but I must have marshmallows in mine! I'm going to hope that S&S will work.), which I'm planning to bring. Thanks!

I need help finding a winter coat. The one I had for the last couple of years has met its fate and I can no longer find it online. Everything I do find and like/would fit is wool or has feathers in it. I live in New York so it has to be heavy, but the major problem I'm having is that I need to find it in XL and it has to be under $200. I'm a female if that helps any but I'm fine with more guy-ish styles, too. Thanks in advance for any help!

Stuffed Cabbage Rolls [05 Nov 2009|08:01pm]

vegancooking

[aprilstarchild]
Vegan and easily gluten-free! Someone posted the original recipe to another community I'm in--the "traditional" version has two pounds of meat in it, ew! I was thinking of using tempeh for stuffing instead, when a friend said she'd used potatoes and mushrooms before. I was intrigued and decided to try it myself, and the result was delicious! I'm the only vegan in a household of three people--and the other two have other food restrictions, including allergies and celiac disease. Finding something we can all eat is fun, and since we all have Polish ancestors, this was perfect.

I havent post in a while!
I had a dehydrator so i had lots of fun with raw food this week.
Feel free to add me if you want to read my foodblog =)

For breakfast, i love having this kind of parfait. I made a cream of macadamia with coconut and pears, a mango coulis with mangos and agave and then i added layers of fresh fruits and sprouted cereals ( buckwheat, lentils, millet and sunflower ) sweetened with just a little bit of agave.

The rest is here! )

Thanksgiving Ideas? [05 Nov 2009|03:40pm]

[ mood | antsy ]

Is anyone doing a non-tofurkey American Thanksgiving? I’m going to my husband’s omnivorous aunt and uncles’ house and I’d like to bring something tastier and nicer than tofurkey. Plus, the consistency always kinda weirded me out.

What are you all doing?
